Have you ever taken a detour in life? You think you’re right on track, but then you realize you’re a few hundred miles in the wrong direction.
Detours are a natural part of life's journey and can happen to anyone. One of the most remarkable stories of detours unfolds in the pages of the Book of Exodus, where we find Israel's captivating adventure.
Imagine this: Moses had just delivered Israel's freedom, and the people were thrilled about their newfound freedom. They expected all their problems to vanish as they left the work camps behind. No more slavery, no more beatings. But their exciting journey hit a roadblock called the Red Sea. Fleeing from the Egyptian army, they stood at the shore, with no boat or bridge in sight. What were they going to do?
Even though they were free from slavery, they soon realized that freedom didn't mean an absence of difficult situations.
From this story, we can learn three valuable lessons:
1. The Shortest Route Isn't Always the Best One
When Pharaoh let the people go, God chose not to lead them along the nearby road to the land of the Philistines. He knew they might change their minds and return to Egypt if they faced war. Instead, God led them on a longer route through the wilderness, eventually bringing them to the Red Sea. God protected them by rerouting them. Our Father does the same for us. God often takes us the long way because we are not ready to take the short way. He knows if you’re not emotionally, mentally, or spiritually strong enough to face the battles ahead. That means He may take you on a detour to prevent your downfall.
2. God Often Orchestrates Obstacles
God purposely led the Israelites to the Red Sea, knowing full well it was in their path. He wanted His people to rely completely on Him. That’s why he allows trials in the first place. They help us grow in spirit and confidence. Just as Israel couldn't cross the sea without God's intervention, our trials allow us to trust in God's plan. What you see as an obstacle, God sees as an opportunity.
3. God Will Make a Way Where There Is No Way
Can you relate to the Israelites? Everything seemed to be going well, but suddenly, you face an insurmountable obstacle with an approaching army. You feel trapped, directionless, and stuck. It’s a bad feeling, but the perfect place to be. Why? Because it means God can turn your trial into a miracle.
God's timing is perfect, and His track record is spotless. He will provide the help you need when you need it. He will meet our needs miraculously and consistently. Even when it seems impossible, God will create a path where there is none.
So, what's the Red Sea situation in front of you? Whatever difficulty you face, know that God specializes in parting the Red Sea. Even if it seems impossible or unthinkable, He will guide you through it. Place your trust in His unwavering character, reliability, and power. He will make a way out for you.
