After a long December break, the Northwest men’s and women’s basketball teams are back in action this week to ring in the new year.
Northwest will open MACCC play against East Mississippi on Thursday, January 5 at 5:30 P.M., marking the first home game for the Lady Rangers since December 1. NWCC ended 2022 with a 4-4 overall record, snapping a four-game losing streak with a close 68-66 win against ASU Mid-South.
Under first-year head coach LaTaryl Williams, the Lady Rangers are 3-2 on the home court. Freshman Marian Jenkins leads the team in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game and a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game. Two more freshmen, Kae’la Mitchell and Zaria Glover, are averaging over seven points per game, with Manaca Keyes also averaging six points per game.
Additionally, the Lady Rangers will also take on Dyersburg State for a non-conference tussle on Saturday, Jan. 7 in Dyersburg, Tenn. The two teams faced each other earlier this season in Senatobia, with Northwest taking a 72-50 victory on November 3.
As for the Northwest men, the Rangers will also open conference competition on Thursday, traveling to East Mississippi for a 6 P.M. tipoff. NWCC is 2-7 on the season and the Rangers are aiming to snap a two-game losing skid that ended the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Northwest will host Holmes on Monday, Jan. 9 for the Rangers’ first home game since Nov. 28. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 6 P.M.
