As football season trickles into basketball season, local teams are slowly beginning to take the floor.
Last week, Magnolia Heights and Independence did just that with both teams earning solid road victories.
On Election Night, there was no debate to be had in Marvell, Ark. as Magnolia Heights opened its season with a convincing 54-40 triumph at Marvell Academy.
MHS opened with an 18-point output in the first period and never looked back, despite a late surge from the Lady Eagles in the second half.
Senior Lucy Lipscomb led the Lady Chiefs with 25 points as Ashton McMinn followed with 12 points.
For Independence, the Lady Kats rolled to a 78-51 victory at Tupelo Christian Prep on Saturday afternoon behind a double-double from senior Elishia Wilson.
Wilson’s 34 points and 10 rebounds were followed by 10 points and 10 rebounds from Kaitlyn Lindsey and 12 points from Jermeria Martin.
With the wins, Magnolia Heights starts the season at 1-0 and Independence improves to 2-0 overall. Both teams are expected to play again this week, with the Lady Chiefs facing Lee Academy (Ark.) on Tuesday evening and Independence taking on Hernando on Friday, November 13.
