In a season that ended with a trip to the second round of the Class 3A Playoffs, the Independence softball program saw three of its student-athletes named to the All-Region 2-3A team last week.
Junior catcher Savely Helton, eighth-grader Kamiya Stephens and seventh-grader Allyson Glover were each named to the all-region team, after guiding Independence to a 17-5 overall record, a 6-2 record against region opponents and a runner-up finish in Region 2-3A.
Helton was a mainstay behind the plate, but did most of her damage with a bat, hitting .460 with five doubles and 19 RBIs. She compiled a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 65 putouts and an assist in 66 total chances.
Stephens stepped into the starting lineup as a seventh-grader last season and continued to improve throughout the 2021 campaign, finishing as the team’s top hitter with a .535 batting average, four doubles, three triples, a home run and 17 RBIs. She also stole a team-high 11 bases.
Glover blossomed into the team’s top pitcher and recorded a whopping 117 strikeouts in 71.2 innings pitched. She also held a team-low 4.20 ERA and made 14 appearances on the season.
