I once passed a car on the interstate that was so full of junk that you barely could even see the driver.
I once saw a car so crammed full of garbage that the only place not full was the driver’s seat!
Then I remember the time that I saw something a little more interesting.
It was a sweet-looking old man driving a nice Cadillac with the back window filled with hats. A Cowboy hat, baseball cap, Derby hat, Straw hat. You name a certain type of hat, and it was in the window!
Now I know men love their hats. That's a fact. If you don’t believe me, just try to wash and dry your husband’s favorite baseball cap and see the multiple shades of red that he can turn! But I still wondered why on earth this man would have so many different kinds.
I would guess that he either loves ALL hats or wears MANY. Either way, he has my vote for the most intriguing collection and the oddest display.
Concerning our Christian life, here is a question to ponder. "How many hats do you wear?” Does your daily attitude require a specific hat?
For instance, maybe there is a cowboy hat for your fighting attitude. A ruffled bonnet for your nice attitude? The witches hat for the days that you really don’t care what kind of attitude you have. And, of course, the wide-brim sun hat with the fancy flowers for Sunday so everyone thinks you have a beautiful attitude!
It’s sad and a little silly, but I am sure that each of us has a nice collection of “hats” that we pull out from time to time.
As a Christian, that just shouldn’t be. For even the Lord prefers that we are either hot or cold, and not lukewarm.
Ever heard the expression, “You can’t ride a horse with two saddles?” Well, we can’t maintain a godly example with an inconsistent attitude. It sends the world a mixed message that we can make our faith fit our feelings instead of our feelings being controlled by our faith.
It may be time to take a little inventory of your spiritual life. If you look and find that the closet is full of more than one hat, it’s time to get real with God and say as the psalmist did, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23-24)
