A former Tate County school teacher charged in 2022 for improper behavior with a student will spend the next several years in prison.
Documents from Tate County Circuit Court show Karen Meraz Kile, 26, of Coldwater, was ordered to consecutively serve 10 years in Mississippi Department of Corrections and five years post-release supervision after pleading guilty to a charge of touching a child for lustful purposes, and 10 years post-release supervision after pleading guilty to a charge of sexual battery.
Kile, who taught English at Independence High School, was taken into custody by deputies from the Tate County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, and charged with sexual battery. She was indicted by the Tate County Grand Jury in March 2023.
A report from TCSO states investigators opened an inquiry after receiving a complaint from Alee’ Dixon, superintendent of Tate County schools, containing allegations of an “inappropriate relationship” between a teacher and student under the age of 18 at Independence High.
Kile was denied bond during her initial court appearance but was eventually released from the Tate County Jail under a $100,000 bond.
