A former Senatobia police officer arrested last year in connection with embezzling money from the Town of Walls has pleaded guilty in DeSoto County Circuit Court.
According to the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor, Herb Brewer, 62, was sentenced to time already served in prison, two years probation and fined $500 after being accused of selling two city-owned vehicles, a Ford Mustang and a Chevrolet Tahoe, to members of his family for less than they were worth and keeping proceeds from the sales.
Brewer worked as an officer with the Senatobia Police Department from February of 2019 until he resigned in January of 2020. The embezzlement charges stem from Brewer’s tenure with the Walls Police Department in DeSoto County where he served as chief from December of 2014 until February of 2019.
Town officials reported irregularities after Brewer's resignation, a release from State Auditor Shad White stated. Special agents arrested Brewer in February of 2020 after he was indicted.
“As long as I hold this position, the Auditor’s office will continue to hold officials accountable when they use their offices to benefit themselves or their family,” White said in a statement. “This sort of illegal self-dealing will not be tolerated.”
White said the guilty verdict prevents Brewer from ever getting a job in a government office in Mississippi again.
