Have you ever passed a vehicle that was so full of junk that you could barely see the driver?
I have. I have seen vehicles that were so crammed full of garbage that the only place not full was the driver’s seat!
I have seen stuffed animals attached to the bumpers and grills of trucks. Even just yesterday, I passed a man on a motorcycle that had a life-size skeleton with a long, pink wig riding on the seat behind him! You can really see some crazy things sometimes. But those are not the most interesting things that I have seen in a vehicle.
I once saw a sweet-looking older man driving a very nice Cadillac with the back window filled with hats. There was a cowboy hat, a baseball cap, a derby hat, and even a straw hat. Any type of hat that you could name was in the window.
Now, I know that all men love their hats. If you don’t believe me, just try to wash and dry your husband’s favorite Cardinal baseball cap and see the multiple shades of red that his face can turn! But why on earth would this man have so many different kinds of hats in his car?
My guess would be that he either loves ALL hats or that he wears MANY. Either way, he has my vote for the most intriguing collection of things people display in their car.
So here is a question for you and me to ponder. “How many hats do you wear?”
What I mean is, “Does your daily attitude require a specific hat?”
Is there a cowboy hat for your fighting attitude?
A ruffled bonnet for your nice attitude?
Maybe a witch's hat for the days that you really don’t care what kind of attitude you have?
Or do you wear that wide-brim sun hat with the fancy flowers for Sunday so everyone thinks you have a beautiful attitude?
It’s a little silly, and awfully sad, for I am sure that each of us has a nice collection of “hats” that we pull out from time to time, and that just shouldn’t be so.
Even the Lord prefers that we are either hot or cold, and not lukewarm.
Have you ever heard the expression, “You can't ride a horse with two saddles?”
We simply can’t maintain a godly example with an inconsistent attitude. It sends the world a mixed message that we can make our faith fit our feelings instead of our feelings being controlled by our faith.
Every now and then, it is a good idea to take a look in your “spiritual closet” and make sure that it’s not full of “hats.”
If you happen to find more than one, it’s time to get real with God and say as the psalmist did, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23-24)
