Cosmopolitan Club meets
The Cosmopolitan Club gathered at LRL Lodge on Circle M Ranch southwest of Senatobia, home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter McKellar, on Friday, Feb. 2, and welcomed local amateur historian Ernie Brents as guest speaker. Mrs. Steve Roberts was hostess for the delightful meeting in an area of the lodge that offered a panoramic view of LRL Lake where that very afternoon flying flocks provided entertainment with their circling, swirling, diving and landing around the lake. A pretty and tasty party plate was served by Mrs.Roberts who had prepared a interesting display of her own vintage items. Mrs. John Lamar shared a thought-provoking devotional with her suggestion, “Busyness is the curse of our age.” After echoing scripture from Psalms, Exodus and Ruth, Mrs. Lamar closed with the encouraging advice, “Give yourself permission to slow down”. Leader Mrs.McKellar introduced the program on History with the quote, “People in small towns, much more than cities, share a destiny,” and welcomed Mr. Brents, a Delta State graduate whose professional background is extensive in law enforcement/state tax commission before serving three terms as Tate County Tax Collector. His FaceBook page is well known for its wonderful pictures and articles from the past, oft visited by many with curiosity about Northwest Mississippi, particularly Tate County and Senatobia. He began by telling us about the Chickasaw Indians, hunters and warriors that preceded any of us. In his very busy retirement life, Ernie Brents is devoted to his daughter’s family, gardening and is the current Tate County Heritage Museum President, having replaced Cosmopolitan Debbie Perkins who served as Museum President for the past 20 years. Mr. Brents graciously welcomed questions toward the close of his presentation and was thanked for sharing his discoveries with the club. At the close of a very brief business session, the meeting was adjourned.
