The Cosmopolitan Club had its last meeting of the club year on Friday, May 7 in the Fellowship Hall of the Senatobia United Methodist Church. Hostess Mrs. Marilyn Bateman served refreshments as the members enjoyed visiting with each other.
Mrs. Jean Bennett shared a devotional about hope that she had written. Using several Bible verses about hope, she painted a word picture of the role hope has played in our lives during the pandemic. We have hoped for an end to COVID, hoped for a vaccine, hoped for a visit with our family, and hoped to eat out again. Her scriptures reinforced the importance of hope in our daily lives. She concluded by sharing O’Henry’s short story “The Last Leaf.”
Leader Mrs. Ann Lamar introduced the guest speaker, Ms. Sally Williams, Executive Director of the Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center. This Center serves children in DeSoto and Tate Counties and is a coordinated response to allegations of child abuse.
She explained the work of the Center’s multi-disciplinary team. Ms. Williams discussed the types of abuse, characteristics of children with each type, the importance of mental health and then shared eye-opening statistics reflecting incidence of child abuse. An important element of her presentation was the responsibility of each person to recognize and report abuse. This informative, eye-opening presentation left members with a deep appreciation for this center and its work.
