Tate County jobless numbers did not change in October and remain at 3.3%, according to statistics from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Tate County ranks 39th in the state in unemployment and the rate of 3.3% includes 11,580 of the eligible 11,970 residents, at least 16 years of age, actively searching for employment in October but could not secure a job.
The county’s rate of 3.3% is slightly higher than the state’s non-seasonally adjusted average of 3.1% and lower than the nationwide average of 3.9%.
Seasonally adjusted rates take annual patterns such as weather, holidays, school schedules and other occurrences that affect employment rates into account. Only nationwide and statewide percentages are adjusted.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines an individual employed if they did any work at all for pay or profit during the survey week; this includes all part-time and temporary work as well as full-time year-round employment.
Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment increased by 11,500 In October and 13,200 this year. Industry sectors registering the largest monthly employment gains are Professional & Business Services; Private Education & Health Services; Manufacturing; and Trade, Transportation & Utilities.
For the month of October, 33 counties in Mississippi posted unemployment rates less than or equal to the state’s rate of 3.1%. Rankin and Union Counties posted the lowest at 2.2% followed by Lafayette at 2.3. Jefferson County had the highest rate at 9.6% followed by Claiborne at 6.5.
October unemployment numbers for surrounding north Mississippi counties:
• DeSoto 3.0%, up from 2.9% in September
• Lafayette 2.3%, up from 2.1% in September
• Marshall 3.6%, up from 3.5% in September
• Panola 3.9%, up from 3.8% in September
• Tunica 3.8%, up from 3.6% in September
