The Tate Record returned to the Mississippi Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest for the first time since 2014. Tate Record staff members took home six awards as a result of their stories from 2021.
“The Record hasn’t participated in the contest since at least 2014,” said Monica Gilmer, Member Services Manager of the Mississippi Press Association. “It might have been longer than that, but in 2014 we went to digital. It could have been a lot earlier than that, but I don’t have the records easily accessible.”
The 2021 Better Newspaper Contest was judged by volunteers from the South Carolina Press Association in an effort to eliminate biased options. Forty-four newsrooms from across the state of Mississippi submitted a total of 1,981 entries into this year’s editorial contest.
Tate Record staff picked up awards for Best Commentary Column, two placements in the Best Magazine Story category, Best Sports News Story, Best News Package, and Best Planned Series.
“We are so proud of all the winners in this contest,” said MPA President Jack Ryan, publisher of the Enterprise-Journal. “The quality work recognized here exemplifies the excellent job Mississippi journalist are doing to cover their communities.”
Now in it’s 156th year, MPA is the trade association representing Mississippi newspapers and affiliated digital media.
