Do you excel in something? A subject, sport, career, or talent? What about our God? In what does He excel? In short, God excels in everything that is good; for, He defines what is truly good. Let us consider three of these good characteristics of God. First, He excels in authority. When you sign a check, you are using your authority over your money. Speaking of God's name is a reference to His authority. David hymned, "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens" (Psalm 8:1), and "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!" (Psalm 8:9). Another psalm proclaims, "Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven" (Psalm 148:13). God has all authority; therefore, He excels in authority. Second, He excels in affection. Again, David wrote in a psalm, "How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings" (Psalm 36:7). The English Standard Version renders "lovingkindness" as "stedfast love." Twice the apostle John wrote "God is love" in his epistle we call "1 John" (1 John 4:8, 16). Truly, because God is love, He excels in affection (love). Third, He excels in ability. The last psalm contains these words, "Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness" (Psalm 150:2). The word "greatness" here refers to works or actions. This characteristic of our God is also seen in the fact that He is the only One Who is "Almighty." God is Almighty (all-powerful); therefore, He excels in ability. While we may strive to excel in various areas in our lives, may we primarily seek to excel in serving our God who is truly excellent. It is important that we be reminded of His authority. It is important that we be reminded of His affection. It is important that we be reminded of His ability. As Paul said in another place, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31).
