The Senatobia Police Department recently concluded the first Citizen’s Academy. I had the pleasure of being a part of the inaugural class. The experience was enlightening, educational and fun in so many ways. At the graduation ceremony, we were running short on time so I didn’t get to express my appreciation to the department for hosting the class.
So, I wanted to take the time to both thank all those involved and to explain a bit further what I believe makes the department truly special in our community.
With over 18,000 police departments in America, there’s a wide range of how successful, effective, or “good” a department can be. One of my classmates mentioned at the graduation ceremony that she felt Senatobia had one of the best in the state. Honestly, I echo those sentiments.
Mayor Greg Graves made a solid decision to bring in Chief Richard Chandler, and under his leadership the department has seen growth, implemented new programs and made more of an effort to be transparent to the public. Through programs like the Citizen’s Academy, Senatobia residents have an opportunity to be invited into the department and realize our guys and gals in blue work hard to make Senatobia a safe place to raise the next generation of leaders and world changers.
In fact, my overall take away from this program is the devotion of Senatobia’s police department to the town and its citizens. To organize, structure and execute the eight sessions took a lot of commitment.
Everyone involved, from Officer McKenzie and Communications Supervisor Kristen Brooks who were present at every session, to Chief Chandler, Asst. Chief Defore, Lt. Jenkins, Officer Stovall, to Detectives Rushing and Cole, to Sgt.’s Carter and Warren and practically everyone at the department, devoted time and energy for the Citizen’s Academy.
Many of them even worked after hours and off duty to help with the sessions. For those reasons, I think it is safe to say our police department truly does have, not only qualified officers, but officers willing to go above and beyond to serve, educate and protect the citizens of Senatobia.
Thank you, SPD for taking the time to deal with the inexperienced antics of my classmates and myself. Thank you for teaching us so we have a deeper understanding of what you do and deal with on a daily basis. I know I’m not alone when I say that deeper understanding has led to a far greater appreciation and respect for your sacrifices.
So know, despite what is going on in the country around us and what is being reported in mainstream broadcast media, I believe the far greater majority of Senatobia backs our blue. But I believe it is because we absolutely have an outstanding and exemplary department to back. So, thank you all.
