Iola Clanton

Iola Clanton, 90, of Independence, passed away December 5, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Raiford Clanton; son, Ronald Clanton; and brother, Archie Powers. 

She is survived by her daughter, Bessie Mary Rushing (Darrell) of Coldwater; son, Barry Clanton (Beverly) of Hernando; sisters, Katherine Dickerson of Senatobia, and Elsie Thomas of Independence; daughter-in-law, Sandy Clanton of Senatobia; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. 

Services were held Wednesday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery.  

Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. 



Mary Ann Scruggs Dancy


Mary Ann Scruggs Dancy, 78, of Coldwater, passed away December 6, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela June Dancy Young and brother Claude Scruggs Jr. 

She is survived by her husband, Spencer Dancy; daughter, Deborah Ann Dancy; sons, Michael Spencer Dancy and Mark Dwayne Dancy all of Coldwater; sister, Janice Moore of New Orleans, La.; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. 

Mrs. Dancy was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. 

Memorials may be sent to West Cancer Center Wings Supportive Services, www.westcancercenter.org/donate/. 

Services were held Friday, December 9, at 1:00 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed in Scotland Cemetery in Coldwater.



Robert Lee Fitch


Robert Lee Fitch, 80, of Memphis, Tenn. passed away December 1, 2016 at Methodists University Hospital. 

He is survived by his daughters, Lettie Mae Jordan of Como, and Bemistine Anderson of Memphis, Tenn.; son, Jesse James Johnson of Memphis, Tenn.; sisters, Eula Mae Jones of Memphis, Tenn. and Mattie Mae Mays of Collierville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Services were held Saturday, December 10, at 12:00 noon at Mt. Eagle M.B. Church in Memphis, Tenn. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Como. 

Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.



Phil Franks

Phil Franks, 65, of Arkabutla, passed away, December 7, 2016 at his residence. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jiggs and Deckie Franks. 

He is survived by his aunts, Merle Henley of Cordova, Tenn. and Rubye Jean Tunnell of Alabama; uncle; J.W. McMullen of Eupora, MS; and many cousins. 

Mr. Franks was a member of Arkabutla United Methodist Church. 

Memorials may be sent to the Diabetes Foundation or Surrette Cemetery. 

Services were held Friday, December 9, at 10:00 a.m. graveside at Surrette Cemetery in Arkabutla. 

Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.



Joyce Freeman


Joyce Freeman, 52, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Chulahoma, Miss., passed away on December 2, 2016. Funeral services were held at Chulahome M.B. Church in Holly Springs on Saturday, December 10 at 12 noon. Burial followed in Southwoods Memorial Parks in Memphis, Tenn.

She is survived by her daughter, Marlesha Thompson of Memphis, Tenn.; son, Hurley Thompson Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; sisters, Elsie Freeman, Melvin Freeman, Eddie Freeman, Loice Nelson and Leaser English, all of Memphis, Tenn.; brothers, Clifton Freeman Jr. of Rockford, Ill., Lee Ester Freeman of Memphis, Tenn., and Larry Freeman of Victory, Texas; and one grandchild.

Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater had charge of the arrangements.



James Donald Garner

James Donald Garner, 75, of Arkabutla, passed away December 2, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto in Southaven. 

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Garner of Arkabutla; daughters, Georgia Garner of Arkabutla, and Stacy Womble (Derick) of Coldwater; son, Jay Garner of Tunica; grandchildren, Kay Anne Thompson, Jeannie Thompson, Travis Sinquefield and Garner Sinquefield; and great grandchildren, Carlee Kate Johnson, Trace Tucker and Anna Taylor Tucker. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry Garner and Dorothy Fuller Garner and his sister, Virginia Dell Garner. 

Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Taylor Hyatt. 

Visitation was held Monday, December 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home. Services were held Tuesday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m. graveside at Brooks Chapel Cemetery.



Elizabeth Jones


Elizabeth Jones, 60, of Senatobia, passed away December 2, 2016 at Merit Health in Batesville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Jones. 

She is survived by her daughters, Rachel Williams of Cordova, Tenn. and Meredith Garman of Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Lamar Dean of Olive Branch; and five grandchildren. 

A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 5, at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia.



Leroy 
McKelroy

Leroy McKelroy, 88, of Coldwater, passed away December 5, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean McKelroy; sister, Shirley Shoemake; brothers, Wayne McKelroy, S. Q. McKelroy, T. E. McKelroy, Paul McKelroy, Jerry McKelroy and Kenneth McKelroy. 

He is survived by his daughter, Connie Carlisle (Larry) of Senatobia; son, Jeff McKelroy (Yostin) of Hernando; grandchildren, Ashley Carlisle, Jeremy Carlisle and Connor Mckelroy; and special friends, Robert and Mickey Hinton and Lowell and Dorothy Brown. 

Mr. Mckelroy was a member of First Baptist Church Coldwater. 

Services were held Thursday, December 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery in Coldwater.


Deborah Cole Shaw


Deborah Cole Shaw, 56, of Arkabutla, passed away December 4, 2016 at her residence. 

She is survived by her husband, Steve Shaw; daughter, Whitney Shaw; son, Justin Shaw all of Waterford; parents, Cecil and Sweetie Cole of Arkabutla; grandmother, Cordelia Jones of Senatobia; sisters, Tammy Covington (Dale) of Waterford, Cathy Taylor of Arkabutla, and Cheryl Pegram (Steve) of Arkabutla; nephew, Cole Covington of Waterford; and three grandchildren, Landan Shaw, Kaiden Shaw and Adalynn Shaw. 

She was preceded in death by her nephew, Cross Pegram. 

Memorials may be sent to West Cancer Center Wings Supportive Services, www.westcancercenter.org/donate/. 

Services were held Wednesday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Arkabutla Baptist Church. Burial followed in Surrette Cemetery.

Gerald Tate


Gerald “Jerry” Tate, 72 of Paducah, Ky. passed away 9:50 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2016 at his residence. Jerry was a native of Crenshaw, Miss. and was retired from Illinois Central Railroad and Canadian Railroad where he served as a bridge supervisor. He was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sherion McDowell Tate; one step-daughter, Jackie Frazier and husband, Brian of Gilbertsville, Ky.; one neice, Paula Clark and husband, Terry of Panama City, Fla.; one step-granddaughter, Jessica Frazier Schmal and husband, Jared of Lexington, Ky.; mother-in-law, Florence McDowell, Calvert City, Ky.; brother-in-law, Wiley Clark of Mississippi. He enjoyed spending time with his close friend, James Troutt.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, at the Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Crenshaw. Rev. Mike Doss officiated. Visitation was held in Paducah, Ky., Thursday, December 8, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah and Saturday, December 10, from 12:00 noon until funeral hour of 2:00 p.m. at the Crenshaw United Methodist Church.
