Betty Jo James

Betty Jo James, 77, of Independence, Miss., passed away at her residence on June 18, 2014. Services were held Friday, June 20 at Lighthouse Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Burial followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery. 

She is survived by her husband, Johnny R. James of Independence; daughter, Vicky Swift (Bennie) of Independence; sons, Michael Ray James (Karen) of Independence, Kenneth Ray James (Tina) of Independence; grandchildren, Brittney Lee and Brian Michael James; and four great grandchildren.

She was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 3341 Pryor Rd., Independence, MS 38638.

Kenneth “Ken” Wayne Powell

Kennneth “Ken” Wayne Powell was born in Como, Miss., on July 2, 1938, to Sanford Leroy Powell and Alice Rebecca Hood Powell.  

He grew up in Philipp, Miss., and accepted Jesus as his Savior at an early age.  At West Tallahatchie High School, he excelled in football and track and field.  He attended the University of Mississippi and was a member of the 1960 National Championship football team.  

As a member of the Army National Guard, Ken spent a year’s active duty at Fort Polk, La.  

Over the past 50 years, he was an independent insurance agent and was recognized with awards of achievement and excellence.  He enjoyed his hobby of  raising trees and other plants for landscaping.

Ken was a member of First Baptist Church in Winona for 43 years, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.  

In recent years, he was active in the church’s Sunday morning worship ministry at Winona Manor.  He was a member of the Gideons International, serving in the Winona Camp.

On June 16, 2014, Ken left this life for his heavenly home.  

He leaves his wife of 46 years, Beth Brannon Powell of Winona; a daughter, Ginger Powell Perry (Robert) of Petal; a son, Patrick Powell (Elizabeth) of Ft. Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Robert Moore Perry, Erin Perry, and Everly Kate Powell; a sister, Bonnie Goldman (Rudone) of Winona; two brothers, Sanford Powell (Carolyn) of Senatobia, Allan Powell of Grenada; and many nieces and nephews.  

Ken was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry Wallis Powell.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, at First Baptist Church in Winona. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.  Bro. George Smith, 

Bro. John L. Walker, Bro. Jerry McNeer, and Dr. Jerry Mixon officiated the services.  

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 18, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., in the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P. O. Box 388, Winona, MS 38967; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Imogene Barmer Smith

Imogene Barmer Smith, 78, of Senatobia, Miss., passed away June 18, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Batesville. 

Services were held Friday, June 20, at 11:00 a.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed in Dean-Crawford Cemetery. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorn Smith and her son, Peter Bryok. 

She is survived by her son, Walter Bryok of Senatobia, MS; grandchildren, Lee Bryok, Ben Bryok and Peter Bryok; and great grandchildren, Kevin Bryok, Kyle Bryok and April Bryok. 

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Church of Christ.
