For the most part, Americans are some of the most fortunate people on earth. Even though there are poor and hungry right here within our borders, there are many "safety nets" designed to help make sure that everyone has enough to eat.

The rest of the world is a different story.

In order to put a spotlight on hunger around the world, and what we can do to help, the children of First Baptist Church Senatobia is participating in World Hunger Awareness Day.

The entire month of October is observed as World Hunger Awareness Month, with special emphasis on the second Sunday (10-10-10 this year). Locally, the efforts of FBC Senatobia will benefit H.O.P.E. Ministries.

The group is sponsoring a food drive, asking church members to bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items and leave them on or near their cars. They will be gathered during the service. Later that afternoon, the items will be sorted and packaged for delivery to H.O.P.E. Ministries.

But, the FBC group can't do this job on their own, so they're asking for help from the community. Local churches are invited to participate by bringing their own donations to the church gym on October 10 at 2:00 p.m. to be sorted and made ready for delivery. Refreshments will be provided, and the congregation which brings the most food will be awarded a plaque.

For more information on World Hunger Awareness Day activities, or to RSVP for the packaging party on October 10, please call the church office at 562-8503 or email
